Doctoral Student Jayla Moody Marshall Elected to ASHE’s Council for Ethnic Participation Executive Committee
Jayla Moody Marshall, a doctoral student in the NC College of Education’s Ph.D. in Educational Leadership, Policy, and Human Development higher education opportunity, equity, and justice concentration, has been elected to serve as the graduate student representative on the Association for the Study of Higher Education’s Council for Ethnic Participation Executive Committee.
“The ASHE Council on Ethnic Participation was the first community I joined when I began my doctoral journey two years ago,” Marshall said. “My mentor, Chelsea Smith ’23PHD, introduced me to the space and community, and since then I have been blown away by the support, resources and transparency provided about navigating new and unknown territory.”
The council’s purpose is to facilitate ethnic participation in the affairs of ASHE. To do that, ASHE has created several initiatives to provide professional development and support for participants, and it also focuses on talent development and the framing of the canon pertaining to the experience of people of color in the academy.
“I wanted to be a part of this team that is actively fostering a community for scholars of color and advocating for a more equitable field,” Marshall said. “Everything about higher education should call us to speak up and serve, and my goal in this role is to answer this call by making sure the next generation of students and scholars is seen, heard, supported and advocated for.”
