Sagi Enicole Gillera, Ph.D. a Senior Toxicologist at ICF; Lauren Redpath, Ph.D. a Trait Testing Scientist and Caneberry Breeder at Pairwise; Harshal Rathod an Environmental and Sustainability Program Manager at ABB; and Adam Mischler, Ph.D. a Scientist III at Precision Biosciences, Inc., came back to share their invaluable experiences transitioning from academia to industry. Their participation in this year’s panel offered current participants a unique opportunity to gain firsthand insights from those who have navigated the same path.
From Academia to Industry: A Journey of Transformation
The panelists shared their personal journeys, reflecting on how their academic backgrounds prepared them for, and sometimes challenged them in, their roles in industry. Their stories provided valuable insights into the skills and strategies that facilitated their successful transitions.
Sagi Enicole Gillera discussed the importance of adapting academic expertise to meet industry needs and how her role at ICF involves applying rigorous scientific analysis to real-world problems. Her advice on navigating the transition underscored the value of flexibility and continual learning.

Reflections and Return
The alumni were not only eager to share their experiences but also expressed how much they valued their own Immersion Week experiences. When asked about their motivations for returning to the program, many emphasized their desire to give back to the community that helped them launch their careers.
“I really enjoyed my time in A2i when I was a graduate student and learned a lot. From that experience, I wanted to pay it forward to future generations so that they can take my experiences and learn from them. I had a great time sharing my thoughts from this A2i and hope that my insights helped them. I hope that it continues at NC State for years to come.”
