Driven by a lifelong connection to NC State, fostered by her father’s work at the university and now shared with her sister and cousin, Clarissa Gernat found a natural home in the College of Design’s Media Arts, Design, and Technology program. This interdisciplinary program, with its emphasis on innovation and technology, is perfectly aligned with her aspirations. Now in her final year, Clarissa’s research delves into the potential of digitally replicating nature within immersive spaces to provide mental health benefits, culminating in a large-scale immersive environment prototype to be showcased in the D.H. Hill Library’s Visualization Gallery. Her journey at NC State has been transformative, honing her technical and creative problem-solving skills through collaborative projects and invaluable mentorship, preparing her to thrive in the dynamic fields of design and technology.
Tell us about your journey to graduate school and what led you to NC State.
My journey to graduate school has been shaped by both personal and academic influences. Growing up, my father worked at NC State, and he always encouraged me to pursue my education and aim for the best in life. This connection to the university made NC State feel familiar and special to me. It’s even more meaningful now, as my sister and cousin are also part of the Wolfpack. When I started looking into graduate programs, the College of Design’s Media Arts, Design, and Technology program immediately stood out. Its emphasis on innovation, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the integration of technology into creative practices perfectly aligned with my goals. Choosing NC State felt like a natural fit for both personal and academic reasons. It’s an environment that fosters both creative expression and cutting-edge research, which makes it the ideal place for me to grow as a designer and problem-solver.
Tell us about your research and/or teaching experience.
I’m currently in my final year, working on my thesis and final project. My research explores the idea that digitally replicating natural elements in an immersive space can provide similar mental health benefits to physically experiencing nature. I’ve come across vast amounts of evidence of how people respond in a positive way to nature, the importance of exposure to the natural environment and the benefits it provides to overall wellbeing encompassed by quality and purpose of life.
For my final project, I’m currently designing and creating a prototype of a large-scale immersive environment that digitally stimulates the presence of being in nature, with the intent of providing mental relief. I plan on exhibiting the experience by the end of the semester in the 360-degree Visualization Gallery in DH Hill Library. I want to bring the outside in and promote a positive approach to mental health through technology.
How has the Graduate School and/or NC State helped you with your professional development?

The program’s collaborative approach has allowed me to refine my skills in teamwork, communication, and project management—essential for success in today’s design and tech industries. These skills, combined with the mentorship I’ve received from my professors have made a profound impact in my journey, and I am incredibly grateful for their guidance and encouragement. I am certain that they have prepared me to thrive in the ever-evolving fields of design and technology.
