NC State has made another impressive showing in the annual U.S. News & World Report rankings of graduate programs at national universities in 2025. Multiple programs have maintained or improved their high rankings, with three placing among the nation’s top five in their respective fields.

Staying Atop the Heap

Two programs in the College of Engineering maintained their top-five rankings from last year: Nuclear engineering ranked at No. 3 again, and biological and agricultural engineering (jointly administered with the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences) stayed strong by repeating its No. 4 ranking from 2024.

The College of Veterinary Medicine also remained in the top five with a repeat of its No. 5 ranking from last year.

NC State’s mathematical sciences programs continued their tradition of national leadership, with statistics ranking at No. 11 and applied math ranking 18th in the country, the same rankings as last year for both programs.

Moving Up the Rankings

In addition, two NC State graduate programs improved their rankings from last year. The College of Education climbed three spots from No. 30 to No. 27, and the university’s public affairs programs moved up four spots from No. 65 to No. 61.

U.S. News calculates its rankings based on a combination of statistical measures that indicate educational quality, such as student scores on admissions tests, and peer assessments of a university’s academic reputation.
