Finishing Strong: Spring 2025 Graduates Share Their NC State Memories and What's Next After Commencement

As the semester draws to a close, a new chapter begins for five exceptional graduate students who are about to don their caps and gowns this Spring. From the first day on campus to the final stretch of thesis deadlines, these soon-to-be alumni have embraced the challenges, growth, and community that define the NC State experience. Each brings a unique story of perseverance and discovery — and a hopeful vision for what comes next. As they prepare to leave the books and labs behind, they share their most meaningful memories, the lessons they’ll carry forward, and the ambitions that will guide them into the future.
“Congratulations to all of our graduate students who have reached this incredible culmination of their academic journey. While we are proud to highlight the accomplishments of five outstanding students in this story, their success is only a small representation of the countless inspiring journeys and incredible achievements found throughout our Spring 2025 graduating class. Each graduate exemplifies the Think and Do culture that defines the Wolfpack. We look forward to see the impact that their training will have in their chosen careers.” Peter Harries, Dean of the Graduate School

What will it mean to be an NC State alumnus?
This journey has meant so much to me. My parents were deeply committed to ensuring that my siblings and I had the opportunity to see and know more. To be an actualization of their dreams and hard work is incredibly fulfilling. I will spend many years practicing gratitude for this journey.

What does being an NC State graduate student mean to you?
When I first arrived at NC State, I noticed a quote at the entrance: “The strength of the wolf is the pack.” At the time, I didn’t fully understand it. But now, looking back on the past two years, that statement resonates with me more than ever. The relationships I’ve built, the connections I’ve made—it’s clear that my strength comes from the pack. The experiences I’ve had at State will always hold a special place in my heart, and I hope to one day give back to this incredible institution.

Jonah Bridges
- Master of Materials Science and Engineering
- College of Engineering
What’s next for Jonah?
I am getting my Master’s degree now, but will be continuing on in my current research group to get my Ph.D. This summer I’ll be completing an internship with the United States Air Force, where I’ll get to assist with the creation of some really cool technology.

Clarissa Gernat
- Masters of Media Arts, Design and Technology
- College of Design
What are your plans after graduation?
My plans for the future are focused on continuing to grow as a creative professional and academic. I’m considering pursuing a PhD to deepen my research. Alternatively, I see myself stepping into a role as a creative director, where I can lead innovative projects with a team of creatives. No matter which path I choose, I want to remain connected to the university. NC State has played such a pivotal role in shaping my personal and professional journey. I am deeply grateful for the opportunities I’ve received here. I would love to give back by mentoring students, collaborating on research, or contributing to the university’s creative community.

What advice do you have for new or current graduate students?
Believe in yourself and don’t be afraid of taking the road less traveled. Changing my degree from MCS to MSCS to dive deeper into research was daunting, but ultimately, it opened up a world of opportunities for personal and professional growth. Also, remember that it’s perfectly fine to pause and recharge every now and then—this stage in your life is fleeting, and it’s important to both make the most of it and create lasting memories.
We proudly congratulate all of our graduate students on earning their degrees this spring. Your dedication, innovation, and impact inspire the entire Grad Pack community.
NC State will celebrate the class of 2025 during its spring commencement ceremony at Carter-Finley Stadium on Saturday, May 3, at 9 a.m. Adm.
