Professional Development on the Go
The Graduate School’s Professional Development unit launches new microlearning platform to help build career ready graduates.
In today’s fast-paced job market, staying ahead is essential to stay relevant and competitive and according to the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), employees are heavily focused on skills-based hiring. This is why the Graduate School’s professional development team has recently released a new microlearning platform that offers graduate students and postdocs an on-demand tool for enhancing their knowledge and sharpening skills in four career-related areas: Career Readiness, Communication, Leadership and Teaching.
Our microlearning modules provide graduate students and postdoctoral scholars with just-in-time learning opportunities that support both their immediate needs and long-term career development. These developmentally sequenced online courses lower barriers to participation and accommodate diverse learning styles, schedules, and levels of prior experience. By delivering focused, targeted content in short formats, the modules make it easier for graduate students and postdocs to meaningfully engage in their professional development. – Dr. Rhonda Sutton, Assistant Dean for Professional Development
This microlearning platform builds on research developed by the National Association of Colleges and Employers which shows that career success requires more than disciplinary expertise. Enhancing the prospects for long-term career success also involves cultivating important career-centric competencies such as communicating with different audiences, managing teams, and designing plans for promoting professional growth.
Recognizing that graduate students and postdocs are often pressed for time, the microlearning modules are small, bite-sized lessons that typically take no more than 10 minutes. After successfully completing a certain number of microlearning modules, participants can earn digital badges which they can share on their LinkedIn profile.
