IMSD Graduate Program

IMSD is an opportunity for NC State graduate students to work with faculty mentors in research labs throughout the year for up to 20 hours a week as a Research Assistant.

Professional Development

IMSD Scholars will also be required to attend professional development seminars offered by the University. Seminar are offered to students monthly during the academic year and weekly during the summer to help students gain more knowledge on various topics that will help them with their academic careers.

Presentation Skills Development and Practice

IMSD Scholars will have the opportunity to attend and present conferences at state, local and national conferences. Scholars will be required to participate in and make an oral or poster presentation at NC OPT-ED Alliance Day and participate in NC OPT-ED Crosstalk.

Financial Award for IMSD Graduate Scholars

Students will receive an IMSD Graduate Research Assistantship which will include a stipend, tuition, fees and health insurance.

* The IMSD Graduate Research Assistanship must be the primary source of funding for IMSD Graduate Scholars for the first two years of the students’ training at NC State. Students who plan to receive supplement funds from a federal or non-federal source, must contact Dr. Banks before submitting an IMSD application.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for consideration, a graduate student must be nominated by their prospective Director of Graduate Programs. Applications and nomination forms will be available online and students must:

1. Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident;
2. Be enrolled full-time in a doctoral program (master’s leading to doctoral permitted) in one of the programs offered through departments participating in the IMSD Program;
3. Be committed to a career either in biomedical or behavioral science research;
4. Have an outstanding undergraduate and (if applicable) graduate academic record (cumulative grade point average).
