New Graduate Student Orientation
Fall 2026 New Graduate Student Orientation will be held in-person at the McKimmon Center on August 14. Students with the last name of A-L will attend the morning session from 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. Students with the last name of M-Z will attend the afternoon session from 1:30 - 3:30 p.m.
The Information Fair will be from 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. and is open to all incoming students.
All newly enrolled graduate students will receive an email with full details in June. The following students DO NOT attend The Graduate School's in-person orientation and, therefore, will not get the email: MBA, MAC, distance, and certificate students.
A separate email will be sent in August with details of the asynchronous online portion of new student orientation. The asynchronous online portion is open to ALL graduate students and is not available until August 15.

Join us in celebrating our postdoctoral presentation winners who participated in the 2026 North Carolina Postdoc Research Symposium:
Dr. Jorge Galeano-Cabral won Best Flash Talk through Audience choice for his presentation titled “From Ice-Cold to Red-Hot: Designing Materials for Extreme Environments.”. His research focuses on understanding and designing materials that not only survive but perform reliably under extreme conditions
Dr. Tucker’s research focuses on antimicrobial applications of our platelet-like particles either using silver nanoparticles, antibiotics, or antimicrobial peptides to prevent infection, reduce bleeding, and improve wound healing after injury. His poster was on the safety and efficacy of our antimicrobial synthetic platelet-like particles or AgPLP.
Dr. Valdes’s research looks at using organic synthesis to design bioactive molecules with real-world applications. He is especially interested in projects that connect fundamental chemistry with translational impact, including crop protection, antimicrobial discovery, and technologies that can move from the lab toward practical use. His poster was titled “Next Generation Antifungals: A Novel Platform for Black Shank Control.”.
Dr. Luke Jackson Tucker and Dr. Alejandro Valdes both won Outstanding Poster Presentation.
Again, join us in celebrating our fellow #GradPack winners 🎉🤩
In this episode of BusPack, David interviews out-of-state Ph.D. student Sarah Jeffers. With her dual major in Biology and Entomology, Sarah’s research focuses on the evolution of signaling in beetles.
From rock climbing to making cakes for post office workers in celebration of her 200th visit to being a witness for her friend’s wedding, Sarah shows us that the life of a Ph.D student goes beyond research.
Watch the video through the end to find out what Sarah has challenged the GradPack! 🐺❤️🚌.
