Mentoring for Postdocs

Overview

Mentoring is an important and vital component of the postdoctoral scholar’s experience. Mentors are critical to the technical and professional development of postdocs. The National Postdoctoral Association (NPA) provides “A Postdoc’s Guide to Mentorship” that provides guidance on how to have a productive mentoring relationship. Keep in mind that the mentoring relationship is two-way; both the mentor and the mentee need to have ongoing communication with one another to set expectations, define goals, clarify needs and engage in a professional relationship that benefits both.

Mentoring Plan

A Mentoring Plan establishes guidelines and expectations between their mentor and mentee. Funding agencies require individually tailored Mentoring Plans to be created, maintained and reviewed on a regular basis with the mentor and mentee. NC State University’s Graduate School has created guidance for how to create a Mentoring Plan. Postdocs and their mentors are encouraged to use this information in the formulation of their mentoring plan.

Mentor/Mentee Training

The Office of Faculty Development (OFE) and the Graduate School’s Office of Postdoctoral Affairs (OPA) have collaborated on a training program, Mentoring Matters, for those who mentor as well as those who receive mentoring. Mentors and mentees are in separate workshops. These 4-part workshop series are offered at no charge to faculty, postdocs and/or graduate students. OFE provides training for mentors. Please contact Dr. Diane Chapman for more information. OPA/The Graduate School provides training for mentees. Dr. Rhonda Sutton is the person to contact for more information about this training.

Individual Development Plan

Creating an Individual Development Plan (IDP) will aid the mentoring process. Postdocs are strongly encouraged to create an IDP that focuses on the career goals of the postdoc. Professional development, research skills, publications and other career-related objectives can be a part of the IDP.
