Tools to Verify Accessibility Compliance

We recommend using the following tools to confirm that your document contains all required accessibility features.

Please note that automated checkers only account for a percentage of accessibility issues. A manual check is needed to complete your review. After using the resources below, complete the manual check detailed here.

Microsoft Word

Use the accessibility-checking features in MS Word to check your file before you save it as a PDF. This is the best way to ensure future accessibility while you are editing your thesis/dissertation.

Google Docs

Download the “Grackle Docs” extension to run an accessibility check on a Google Doc. It also allows users to export their document as a tagged PDF. (Be sure to fix any issues you find using Google Docs, not Grackle. While Grackle does provide an interface to correct some issues, changes do not reliably “stick” when the document is opened in an account without Grackle installed.) Note: This extension is supported and licensed by NC State University.

LaTeX

If you choose to use LaTeX:

  • Use accessibility packages to create document structure, tags, and alt text
  • Use Adobe Acrobat Pro for an accessibility check after exporting to PDF

Adobe Acrobat Pro

Use the built-in accessibility-checking features before uploading your document to the ETD system.

  1. Open the PDF in Adobe Acrobat Pro.
  2. Navigate to the Accessibility Tool (usually in the right-hand sidebar or under “All Tools”).
  3. Select “Accessibility Check” and click “Start Checking.”
  4. The Goal: No bold “Failed” items in the left-hand sidebar. (Note: “Logical Check Order” and “Color Contrast” will always show as “Manual Check Required”—this is normal).

Reminder: After using automated accessibility checks, complete the brief manual check detailed here. You must manually check for things like correct headings and lists, text images, and the removal of comments and tracked changes (tracked changes must be turned off before exporting to PDF).
