Authorship Statement

The authorship statement should specify contributions from additional authors

Students must develop an authorship statement page in consultation with their advisory committee. The page should appear in the preliminary section, after the List of Tables and before the first body page of the document. Please include a sentence acknowledging whether or not generative artificial intelligence was used at any point in the creation of the document.

For a visual example, download the sample authorship page.

Authorship statements must include the following:

  • A header that reads “AUTHORSHIP STATEMENT” at the top of the page, centered and in all caps.
  • A lower-case roman numeral page number.
  • A list of the chapters of the dissertation or thesis that result from collaborations and/or include contributions from other authors.
  • A description of the student’s role and the role of each contributor for each identified chapter/section/topic.
  • For chapters that correspond to a manuscript in the publication process, include a full citation of the article, including its status at the time of final approval (i.e., submitted, in revision, accepted, published).
  • For work that is published at the time of dissertation/thesis submission, include necessary copyright authorizations for inclusion of previously published content.
  • If the dissertation contains no original contribution from others—aside from those captured through citations and/or acknowledgements, include a statement that the student is the sole author of the dissertation/thesis.
  • A clear and thorough description of whether and how tools from Generative Artificial Intelligence were used, as per section 3.6.E of the Graduate School Handbook.
